FleetPartners has pitched in to help one of the Sustainable Business Network’s admirable and important ecological efforts around New Zealand, the Million Metres Streams Project
The non-profit is literally breathing new life into many parts of the country to revive failing eco-systems. FleetPartners first project involves the replanting of the banks of the Belmont Stream near Wellington. The Sustainable Business Network is the driving force behind this project, enlisting businesses and the local community.
Church groups, community service workers, scout troupes and rest home residents are just a small part of many volunteers involved. The riparian restoration is an extremely important for the Belmont, which is a tributary of the Porirua stream. The project will protect the remaining forest of pukatea and titoki - which are already helping the native bellbirds and red-crowned kakariki re-establish their presence in the area. Other native species like koura, long fin eels and banded kokopu will get shade from the vegetation being planted.
On top of these valid reasons, improving the stream banks' stability, which will reduce sediment leeching into the Porirua harbour, where it causes huge problems, notably decreasing water quality. This sort of major rejuvenation effort doesn’t come cheap - there are 409 metres of planting to be done, at a cost of $48 per metre. As at mid October there has been 371 metres planted.Belmont’s rejuvenation is just one of a number of these projects underway - and with the expense involved in getting this important work done, donations are vital.
