Duffy Books in Homes
Duffy Books in Homes was established in 1994 by Once Were Warriors author Alan Duff and philanthropist Christine Fernyhough.
The programme was initially the brainchild of the writer who, upon visiting Camberley School in Hastings in the early 1990s, decided to formulate a plan to end the cycle of ‘booklessness’ in some homes and promote literacy as an essential skill for all New Zealanders.
The programme officially launched in 1995 with 80 schools, 16,000 students and 14 sponsors initially partaking.
Since its birth the programme has grown to encompass over 800 schools and early childhood education centres across the country. More than 100,000 children receive 650,000 brand-new books each year thanks to 256 generous partners and supporters. The programme currently supports decile 1, 2 and 3 schools with three book offers throughout the year, providing children with books where it might otherwise not be possible and has just recently extended this to approved decile 4 schools.
To get the message on the importance of reading and to support literacy in New Zealand two groups of travelling actors journey from North Cape to Bluff bringing the message 'It's Cool to Read and Cool to Achieve' to tens of thousands of kids. With around 500 schools to reach, the live 45 minute show has become a Duffy institution and one that FleetPartners is proud to support by providing a vehicle to help them deliver their message.
Million Metres Streams Project
MMS is New Zealand’s first conservation crowd-funding website, developed by the Sustainable Business Network in collaboration with Enspiral, which aims to help restore the health of New Zealand’s waterways by speeding up and scaling up riparian (stream bank) planting. FleetPatners purchase riparian planting by the metre, and the money is allocated to stream restoration projects that are listed on the website https://millionmetres.org.nz/projects-old/open-projects/.
FleetPartners latest contribution is going to improve the mauri of the Kaipara in reducing the sediment and improving water quality in the Northern Wairoa River and its catchment. A key part of this project is riparian planting. The goal is to plant 100,000 native plants and tress annually along streams, rivers and wetlands for five years. Eventually, the plants will grow up and shade the water, lowering water temperatures and providing haitat and food for native birds and fish. Bringing back wetlands means they can filter nutrients and sediment and keep them out of the river and the harbour below
FleetPartners have so far contributed to the following projects:
IAMHOPE
In 2018 FleetPartners supported former stand-up commedian Mike King to Break the Silence on suicide and the symptons that lead to suicide in NZ on his nationwide journey from Invercargill to Cape Reinga.
I AM HOPE
I will not judge
I will not shame
I will not rant
I will not blame
I will not gossip
Or react
I AM HOPE
I've got your back
These words were penned by King and Ezekiel Raui - a teen who knows what can happen when hope is lost.
Around 133 teens are lost each year to suicide and New Zealand has the second highest suicide rate amoung those aged 25 and under in the developed world. Our teen rate is the highest.
